Almost every business will own intellectual property rights in one form or another. These rights could exist in almost anything whether it be a recipe, a piece of software, a database, a method of marketing your business, or a design for a new product or a brand. Our IP and Technology group can help you to identify any intellectual property rights which may form part of your business and more importantly how to go about protecting or exploiting them commercially. We regularly advise on the following issues: Patents Protection of know-how Design rights Copyright Trade marks Data protection Freedom of Information. Who We Work With: We take great pride in acting for a very broad spectrum of clients ranging from “the man in his garage” to major PLCs. We have particular experience in acting for utilities such as clients involved in the gas and electricity sector. In addition, we focus on IT industries including telecommunications operators, software manufacturers and high growth on-line businesses. A large part of our day-to-day work involves advising on licensing in/licensing out of intellectual property such as trade marks or patents but also extends to advising on joint R&D projects and spin-out companies. Free IP health check We focus on “added value” and constantly look to find solutions to meet our clients' needs. We often identify those issues through our free “intellectual property health check” or “audit”. This is nowhere near as complex as it sounds. It involves carrying out a review of a business’ activities and identifying any areas of opportunity or concern. Over the years, we have developed expertise in IT outsourcing and have been involved in several large scale projects. We have also built up a reputation in contentious work and have advised clients on numerous intellectual property disputes ranging from Court of Session Litigation to informal mediation. The group is led by Colin Miller who is accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a specialist in intellectual property law.
